Outline

At dawn, everyone has gathered in the common room. The storm has begun to move on, but the inn still creaks in the blustery winds.

If Kara Tanner managed to slip away during the night, she has now returned together with two soldiers from the Winterhold Guards.

The characters are asked by Kara if they believe that Lieutenant Artemis Nahanna was murdered. She also asks them if they have found any evidence and if they know who killed him, in that case.

the innkeeper’s confession

However, before the characters can reply, Inga Broadhammer suddenly breaks down.

Read Aloud

“Wait!” Inga Broadhammer says, in an unsteady voice. “Before you continue, I…I have something to admit.”

She draws a long, ragged breath. “It was I. I murdered the lieutenant.”

The guests gasp in unison.

“I poisoned him,” Inga says. “But I never meant to kill him – please, it is true. You must believe me!”

She buries her face in her hands.

The other guests look at Inga in stunned silence after her tearful confession.

Only Enoch the Birdwhisperer doesn’t appear to be entirely surprised by Inga’s revelation.

if the characters can’t provide any contrary evidence or make the real murderer confess:

Kara Tanner and Jon Callion will arrest Inga and take her to Winterhold to face justice, and the adventure ends.

Jon will later double-cross the drow and reveal their cave to his superiors. However, the drow never truly trusted him, and Jon is eventually found dead in the woods with a poisoned dart buried in his neck.

if the characters point out Jon Callion as the murderer:

Jon Callion will pretend to be both surprised and offended to be accused of the murder. However, if he is pressed with questions that he can’t answer, or if the characters have gathered compelling evidence, he will snap and admit that he poisoned Artemis. Jon’s handsome face is contorted by an ugly sneer.

“Fine,” he hisses between gritted teeth. “I admit I murdered the lieutenant. He was pompous and not fit to lead a pack of street dogs, let alone someone like me.”

“But why?” Kara says, clearly taken aback. “No one liked the man, but that’s no reason to kill him!”

“During our scouting mission, we found a cave that the drow frequently use. He would have blabbed about it to the captain. I simply had to stop him.” Jon scoffs and glares at the characters. “And if these idiots hadn’t shown up, I would have gotten away with the murder.”

With that, Jon draws his sword but before he can attack …

Read Aloud

An ice-cold and fierce wind sweeps through the common room. It is so strong that it topples chairs and knocks over several of the table lanterns. The crackling fire at the hearth is snuffed out. Darkness descends, and shadows fill the room while a hoarse voice echoes in the air.

“Justice?” the chilling voice whispers mockingly.

“You mortals think you know the meaning of the word, but you have no idea. I have come from the grey mists beyond the veil to show you.” There is a pause. “I shall have my bittersweet revenge and punish the guilty – they shall not be given the opportunity to grow old or have time to regret neither slyness nor cruelty.”

Dragging footsteps are heard from outside the inn. With a mighty crash, the sturdy oak door to the inn is thrown wide open and reveals a hideous creature.

The creature is the late Lieutenant Artemis Nahanna, who has risen from the dead to avenge his death. He has the statistics of a wight and will fight anyone who stands in his way.

Notes on the fight:

• Due to the extinguished lanterns, the common room is now dimly lit .
• Inga will reach for her heavy crossbow behind the bar, but she will only use it to defend herself .
• If given a chance, [[plots/murder-at-the-old-wolf-inn/npcs/jon-callion|Jon Callion]] will attempt to sneak away while everyone is distracted by the wight.

the final evidence

If the characters search Jon’s person, they find two bottles of drow poison and one Potion of Healing without a label. The glass bottle matches the healing potions that can be found in Hugo von Silverton’s room. There is also an empty poison bottle that Jon used to poison Hugo’s wine.
