If the characters succeed in solving the mystery at the Old Wolf Inn, Kara Tanner will reward them with 50 gp.
In addition, Inga Broadhammer gives them an additional 50 gp and a wooden barrel filled with her finest apple brandy. She adds that the characters are always welcome back to the Old Wolf Inn and never have to pay for their stay.
the guests chime in
William Fastfinger joins in the congratulations y composing a surprisingly good and catchy song about the whole incident. He titles the song “Who Killed the Guard in the Night – Can You Perchance Figure It Out?”, and over the following years, it becomes a rather popular drinking song. In addition, Hugo von Silverton (if he is still alive) offers the characters a 20% discount on his current and future goods, should their paths cross again.
Finally, Enoch the Birdwhisperer gives the characters a silver spoon for “Bringing peace to the forest and my favourite inn.” The antique spoon (worth 10 gp) was recently brought to Enoch by his tame raven, named Crow, who pinched it from a stenbumling troll’s treasure hidden deep in the forest. Crow isn’t overly pleased with Enoch’s generosity and will make a discreet attempt to steal the spoon back from the characters.
epilogue
The following years turn out to be prosperous for the Old Wolf Inn and Inga Broadhammer.
After the ordeal with the murder and all the worry that came with storing contraband in her basement, Inga decided against working with the local smugglers again. However, during the night when the dead body was discovered, Inga offered all her guests free drinks, and many complemented her delicious and potent apple brandy. The apple brandy is made after a secret recipe that has been in her family for generations.
With the help of a frequent customer and travelling brewer, Maltimar “Malte” Ashbeard, Inga decided to scale up the production to increase her earnings.
The inn’s basement was repurposed as a brewery, including a large fermenter and a first-class distiller of gnomish design. Later she founded The Broadhammer Brewery, and its delicious brandy and ciders quickly became popular at many taverns in the region.
the ghost at the old wolf inn
It is said that once every year, on the same day that Lieutenant Artemis Nahanna was murdered, a ghostly apparition of an elven soldier can be seen at midnight. It appears in the Old Wolf Inn’s finest room, where it silently sits at the desk and writes a report.
The ghostly soldier has also made itself known on other occasions as a foreboding warning – especially on nights that the drow carry out raids nearby.
aftermath
The characters receive a group award of 1,350 XP for accomplishing the quest, plus additional XP for defeating monsters. Alternatively, at the DM’s discretion, this point serves as a milestone and the characters gain one level.
the journey continues
When the characters are about to leave the inn, Inga waits by the entrance to bid them goodbye. She offers them a dozen freshly baked cinnamon buns wrapped in a kitchen towel to keep them warm.
Read Aloud
“Remember that you are always welcome back,” Inga says and smiles. “And hopefully, the next step of your journey will be less eventful.”
You glance at the sky as you step outside. The dark clouds have passed, and the fierce wind has abated. The road and a bright and beautiful autumnal day lie before you.
