Mimic Mayhem
aka Pilgrim’s Peak, aka Ratstew Gap
IMPORTANT: Do not tell your players the name of the one-shot or that they will be facing mimics! Instead, I recommend calling this adventure Pilgrim’s Peak or Ratstew Gap.
Character Level & Difficulty
Players can make new characters for this adventure or use existing ones. Whether running this as a one-shot or as part of your campaign, the PCs can be anywhere from 3rd to 13th level. Less experienced D&D players may enjoy the adventure best at 4th level while more seasoned players might like the chance to play at a higher level.
The enemies, which are all mimics, adjust to the combined power of your adventuring party. Simply add up the total level of your party. For example, if you have 4 players with 5th-level characters, the combined party level would be 20 (4x5).
| Combined Party | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Level12 or less | Ignore all the colored special abilities. |
| 13 to 30 | Add only the green special abilities. |
| 31 to 48 | Add the green and yellow special abilities. |
| 49 to 78 | Use all the colored special abilities (green, yellow, red) |
In this adventure, your party will face various sizes of mimics. The stat blocks are too large to list next to the encounter information. Instead, you will find all the statblocks listed at the end of this PDF. It may be helpful to print those pages or have a duplicate of this PDF open in another window.
Adventure Overview
In this humorous adventure, your players arrive at Ratstew Gap and soon discover it is overrun with mimics. It is a fast-moving story with a lot of combat and very little decision-making or puzzles. There are four combats (and an optional fifth) which will eat up a lot of your game time. The interludes between fights are meant to be humorous and brief.
Clues are laid out before the players so that they eventually focus on the inn’s cook, in turn leading them to the solution to the mimic problem.
Managing the Silliness
Be prepared for a cartload of unsophisticated humor. This is a silly, farcical story laced with flatulence and low-brow comedy. Expect your players to be goofier than normal, but try to keep things moving so that you can complete the adventure in a reasonable time.
Narration
Read aloud
The text in boxes like this is narration and meant to be read aloud to your players.
Maps & Tokens
Maps are provided for each encounter, with and without grids. These are easy to import into your VTT platform. And if you draw them out on your erasable mat, the dimensions do not have to be precise.
Sharing Visuals
This adventure has many illustrations intended to be shared with your players. In an effort to make this as easy as possible, I’ve included three options for how to share them.
-
Show them the illustration included inside this PDF. I’ve put the artwork on their own pages so that you can show them your screen or printout without sharing any details they shouldn’t see.
-
Use the included digital art. In the zip file there is artwork you can share with your players, either by opening the file and sharing your screen or by sending them the art file.
-
Sharing a URL. Next to each illustration is a URL. You can copy and paste this direct link to your players.
