Description

The Street of Harps area is the center of the performing arts in Haven, from bards and troubadours to actors, dancers, jugglers, and clowns. The Street of Harps runs south from the Street of Caravans to a wide plaza, the Leiderstrasse, and on down to intercept the winding Horseshoe.

Many of the buildings on the Street of Harps, and neighboring streets, are the shops and residences of instrument makers, Music Copiers, or other craft masters related to the performing arts. Those who have shops on the Street of Harps above the Leiderstrasse are acknowledged masters of their crafts, and their prices reflect their expertise.

Below the Leiderstrasse, and on the neighboring streets are the shops of lesser masters and journeymen, residences of bards and other members of the community, and various studios and more ordinary shops such as weavers, meat sellers, etc. Theaters and the ivy-covered Guildhall of Entertainers face each other across the wide stone-paved Leiderstrasse, with its statuary, flowerbeds, and fountains.

Off Vine Street, to the east of the Street of Harps, Circus Park takes up the entire large block, is enclosed by a high stone wall, and serves as an off-season rest and rehearsal spot for many circus and carnival style performers between tours.

Most of the people encountered in the Street of Harps neighborhood are involved in show business, from bards to those who make costumes and sets for the theaters, to the hopefuls who wait tables at Scholl’s Tavern, waiting to be discovered. For the most part, there is a close community spirit among the people on the Street. Everyone knows everyone, at least within his area of expertise - this is partially due to the nature of the business, and the binding effect of the Guild of Entertainers. Of course, the sometimes competitive nature of show business frequently instigates petty jealousies and feuds among the folk of the Street.

Rumors heard in the taverns of the Street of Harps, particularly in the Mixolydian Mode, are many times simply gossip about other area residents who are not present at the time. It is suggested that the GM study the NPC descriptions at the end of this section, and those mentioned in conjunction with local shops, to create appropriate stories.|GM Note Bards also travel and perform throughout the city, and frequently pick up choice bits of information to share over beer back home. Almost any rumor in Haven might be heard on the Street of Harps.

Life on the Street of Harps is dominated by the Guild of Entertainers. All performances for money fall under the jurisdiction of the Guild, which tries, with varying success, to monopolize the field. It is technically illegal to perform for pay without a license, which is only obtained through Guild membership. Auditioning for acceptance into the Guild is covered under the Guildhall’s listing later in this section.

Fenris’ Troupe

  • Fenris Redbeard: An experienced showman, he has lived most of his life on the road with his troupe, Redbeard’s Repertory Players.
  • Raphael Swiftrider: Horse wrangler and trainer for Fenris
  • Bing and Bob: The two halflings are brothers, and seem to act as two halves of one personality. Bing fancies himself a singer, and loves to sing love songs and ballads, particularly when there are ladies present. Bob tells jokes and funny stories, and has a quick wit, and an incredible arsenal of bad puns.
  • Simba the Strong: Simba manages the two lions, the bear, and the griffin that comprise the Beast show.
  • Clairone: A beautiful girl of 18, with wide, violet eyes, fair skin, and waist-length hair of jet black, with a sweet soprano voice.
  • Toric Habadash: Nominally hired by Fenris Redbeard as a guard he in fact a member of the Thieves Guild
  • Yohan: Nominally by Fenris as a guard, he is actually there to ensure Toric completes his mission

  • Xandrian: When visible, appears as young elf with long blond hair, wearing a tunic and boots, a cloak and a hood. He is in fact a Ghost.
  • Chiles Putney: Star of the stage and extravagant off-stage.
  • Phineous Tarkin: Manager of the Muses Theatre
  • Robin O’Leary: Dashing and handsome young bard who who tries to appear part of the “in crowd”
  • Anton Valvidi: Elderly orchestra conductor
  • Elias Thornapple: A jester by trade but sharper than he appears.
  • Rael Gavotte: Magestrate of the Guild of Entertainers, though somewhat lacking as an entertainer.
  • Largo Profundo: A great, round man with a basso voice. He is the Singing master of the Guild of Entertainers
  • Vernadot: A tall, thing harpist wanna-be who seems to be having unexpected success.
  • Melisandre: A young, plain, bard who might be more than she seems.
  • Helvia Larksong: Oversees the Guild of Entertainers’ various journeymen.
  • Turlough O’Carolan: An elderly but revered harpist whose voice is still rich and strong.
  • Han Vilkorus: Local heartthrob who has let this go to his head.
  • Kivi and Petriko: A talented young couple who spend most of their time teaching dance and acrobatics at their studio.
  • Ratchet: Owns a small shop off Holly, where he runs a buy-and-sell operation. He specializes in buying newly arrived merchandise (particularly musical instruments) and then reselling them as soon as possible.
