# Outline
** *
This is a modified version of the [Sins of the Past](https://www.dmsguild.com/product/326297/Sins-of-the-Past) adventure (full credits, below). It has been changed to fit the world of Antheros and the Haven Irregulars campaign (and to adjust some grammar that bothered me). One major change is the family name of the crypt owners, from Phylund to Geronde.
* **

# Introduction
> “Few brave souls dare to visit the [[landmark/city-of-the-dead]] at night. Some might say that tales of nighttime horrors are for children, but the wise folk know better.”
-- Sir [[person/ambrose-everdawn]]

# Background
Generations ago the [[organization/geronde-family]] was known in Haven as fearless and experienced monster hunters who always succeeded in their job. Their fame started with the famous knight and founder of the noble house - Ekhan Geronde, who slew a red dragon.

Approximately 100 years ago, Ekhan's grandson, [[person/nesan-geronde]], decided to capture a hag coven. He planned to interrogate the hags, kill them and harvest for body parts. He and his party managed to capture the coven and kill two of the hags. One, however, managed to escape. Her name was Ursula. Furious that she lost her sisters, she cursed Nesan and his bloodline - he and his heirs started to manifest as ghosts after death. Ursula knew the family's pride, so she set a tricky condition to break the curse: to spread the word about it.

To maintain the family's prestige, Gerondes claimed that all of the coven was destroyed. They also placed a Mirror of Life Trapping inside their mausoleum. In addition to the normal functioning of such a mirror, this one has a special property such that any undead creature facing it immediately becomes trapped. Thus, the ghost-manifestation problem was solved.

Nesan became the first ghost who fell to mirror's magic and over the years, the mirror has almost hit its limit. With the most recent burrial, there are now 11 ghosts trapped.

Recently, [[organization/the-jackals]], a gang of grave robbers, broke into the Geronde mausoleum in the [[landmark/city-of-the-dead]]. Two of them immediately fell victim to the mirror's magic, which allowed Nesan to escape from his cage. Insane after hundreds of years of imprisonment, he slew other three gang members who tried to run, and now guards the family mausoleum, fixated on keeping the secret of the curse.

# Overview
Sins of the Past takes place in the city of Haven. This adventure is designed for a party of 4-5 3rd-level characters and takes approximately 3-4 hours to play. It can be summarized to the following points:

- [[organization/the-jackals]], a band of five grave robbers, broke into the [[organization/geronde-family]] mausoleum and discovered a secret room with an activated mirror. Two of them immediately become trapped in it, and Nesan freed from his cage.
- After Nesan was released from the mirror, he quickly escaped through the walls and slayed the remaining members of [[organization/the-jackals]] gang who tryed to run. He destroyed their jaws, making * **Speak with the Dead** * spell impossible to use on them.
- Since this event is more than the normal City Watch is prepared to handle, the Haven Irregulars have been called in. Their task is to find the cause of these strange deaths and eliminate a potential threat to the cemetery.
- After investigating the graveyard and having a brief encounter with dead gang members who have risen as vicious will-o-wisps, characters find their way into the mausoleum.
- Once inside, characters are searching for the ghost's whereabouts and eventually face the Mirror of Life Trapping, and learn about Geronde's family dark secrets.
- Characters either defeat the ghost by trapping it back into the mirror or find through Geronde's notes details about the hag's curse and use this information to free all ghosts and lift the family curse.

# City of the Dead
[[landmark/city-of-the-dead]] is the largest public park in Haven. It features crafty sculptures, astounding mausoleums, beautiful trees and bushes, and curly walkways that allow visitors to walk and see all of its splendors. Havenites abandoned the practice of burying their dead long ago, using mausoleums instead of graves. The richest and largest of Haven's families have extradimensional parts in their mausoleums, which they use for burials.

[[landmark/city-of-the-dead]] looks most astounding at night, when hundreds of driftglobes, which usually illuminate the city, return and gather here.

# House Geronde
Details of the [[organization/geronde-family]] can be read elsewhere but are summarized here.

- A noble family from Haven, originating from the city's founding.
- It was founded by the famous dragon slayer Ekhan Geronde approximately 5 generations ago.
- Use to specialize in the many uses of monsters, they capture and sell monsters both as pets and guard beasts. Those that couldn't be tamed are harvested for every part of their body, from their skin and bones to their flesh and organs.
- Eventually the family fell upon hard times and lost most of its greatness until Lady [[person/rowena-geronde]] became its matriarch.
- The [[landmark/geronde-family-residence]] estate can be found in [[settlements/the-heights]].
- [[person/rowena]] is not in Haven when events of this adventure occur - she left the city for an unknown purpose. Her children are in Haven but not likely to get involved in any of this, deferring to Rowena.

# Running the Adventure
To run this adventure, you need the D&D fifth edition core rulebooks: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual.

Magic items mentioned in this adventure are described in appendix [[article/a.-magic-items]]. Stat blocks for creatures that can be found in this adventure are listed in appendix [[article/b.-monster-stats]]. Important information about adventure's main NPCs can be found in appendix [[article/c.-npcs]].

## Option: Using Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
"Haunted", from Supernatural Regions in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything suits this adventure perfectly. If you want to include it, you can roll on this table any time the characters would encounter ghostly manifestations. This table is provided in appendix [[article/d.-supernatual-regions]] for convenience. But be mindful, doing so will increase the overall difficulty of the adventure.
