Once the players have defeated or subdued Herbert and acquired Beatrice they can return to Lady Windlewood for their reward.
If they use the Recolour scroll to restore the proper plumage before returning, Lady Windlewood recognizes Beatrice immediately and scuttles off to retrieve their payment of100 gold each plus a generous bonus of 50 gold per person.
If they don’t use the Recolour scroll, Lady Windlewood reacts with annoyance initially until she interacts with Beatrice and realizes it really is her pet. She’ll request the plumage be restored and will only pay the agreed-upon 100 gold per PC.
After the guard captain is alerted to the mission’s success, he thanks the PCs and requests that they return the deputization forms provided to them by Higgins. He also indicates that he might approach them in the future next time the guard requires outside assistance.
Assuming Herbert escaped, he flees the warehouse and keeps an eye on it for a few days through divination magic. When he deems it safe to return, he teleports back in, retrieves all his notes and belongings, and leaves town for good, presumably to find a new place to live and set up shop.
