Having completed your early training as a
, you were left at loose ends when your master kicked you out and said to “go make a living with what I taught you”. After knocking about for a while, you found yourself in the Free City of Haven, not sure what to do. Spying a recruiting poster for the Haven City Watch , you thought “what the hell, at least the training will kill a few weeks.”
What’s that you say? It didn’t happen that way? Then perhaps you can tell me how you ended up in Haven and attending The Academy. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
OK, now that we’ve got that straight…

The training was pretty straightforward but at the same time not what you really expected. Instead of learning how to stop crime and keep people safe, it was more about marching, discipline, and umpteen different ways to say “Oy! What’s going on here, then?” While you did learn about the structure of the watch and how it functions in Haven, and how the city government and legal system work, you were somewhat disappointed to learn that the role was more about keeping drunks in line and stopping fights that break out - not really about helping people. Whenever you tried to point this out you were told to shut it and get back in line. On the plus side you managed to find a handful of kindred spirits who were equally disillusioned. Over several evenings at the local tavern and countless hours of pointless scutwork at The Academy you became fast friends.
Now what? There are more stories to tell about how you all came together? Do tell!

After six seemingly pointless weeks, graduation day rolled around. The ceremony was pretty basic; you got your badge, a truncheon, a bell to call for help, handshakes from Academy Captain Themo Lundek and from Mikyl Swiftsword, the Commander of the Watch. From there you wandered over the posting board to see where you would start your career as Watchman. While other Trainee names were listed with a station house, your name only had a cryptic “See Acting Captain Lyza , The Giggling Gryphon, tomorrow at 9:00am.” Even odder is that you’ve never heard of The Giggling Gryphon, it’s certainly not one of the local Academy hangouts. On the plus side, your friends all had the same message. Oh well, since you have nothing to do until tomorrow at 9am you decide to join the rest of your classmates for a drink (shocking, I know).
While out with your classmates, you managed to learn the following:
- The Giggling Gryphon is somewhere on a backstreet in The Commons, off Loom St.
- Lyza was a rising star, recently promoted from Station Officer to Acting Captain - whatever that is. The normal promotion from Station Officer comes with a station to command but she didn’t get one so people are starting to suspect maybe she screwed up somehow.
- There are rumours of an underground trade in slaves, something not heard of in many years.
- There are rumours that some high mucky-muck on the Council of Boroughs is meddling in the Watch and Watch Commander Swiftsword isn’t happy.
- A rival group seems to be making a run at the Thieves’ Guild.
- An heir to the Kingdom of Haven has been found and is riding to Haven with an army. Nobody gives this much credence however given there hasn’t been a king here for centuries.
- Did you hear about the ship that was lost at sea, The Nightmare? They say that it was carrying a fortune in gold and jewels now everyone is looking for the wreckage.

It is now 6:00am and reveille is sounding at The Academy barracks where you’ve been staying. You have three hours to get up, dressed, fed and find The Giggling Gryphon somewhere on the other side of the river. Oh, and you have a splitting headache and feel slightly nauseous from too much…whatever that was you had last night.
