# Foreward
What follows is based upon **The City Watch** , a series of adventures obtained via [Kickstarter campaign](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/skd/one-hour-rpg-the-city-watch/) of the same name (full credits, below). It has been modified to fit within the [[settlements/free-city-of-haven]] setting in this world.
# Introduction
In these ten adventures, the player characters (PCs) are all members of the [[organization/haven-city-watch]]. Their duties will involve patrolling the streets, manning the city gates, investigating crimes, and doing whatever [[person/lyza]], the captain of the guard, tells them to.
All of the adventures are stand alone (except the final adventure, which is a two parter), though there are recurring characters and themes, so it would be better to play them in order.
Each should take about an hour to play. If it is important for you to stick to that hour, it will be the GM's responsibility to ensure that a game does not go over (or too far under). The GM needs to set the pace, speeding things up or slowing things down according to how the players are doing. To aid the GM in this, each adventure is split into several acts, and each of these is given an estimated duration. Sometimes, suggestions are provided as to what to leave out (or add in) if the players get behind (or ahead of) schedule. Also, the GM should not be afraid to cut to the next act if necessary, possibly even in the middle of action or combat. Combat can take up a lot of time in a Role Playing Game, and for that reason many of the combat encounters in these adventures are designed not to be fought to the death.
The adventures are intended to be played with fifth edition of the world's oldest RPG system, and the stats and abilities for any monsters, spells, and magical items in * **bold italics** * are listed in the core rule books, or can be found online. Page numbers for these books are also given if likely to be needed.
Finally, you might like to know that there is a webpage supporting the adventure. It includes handouts, artwork, pre generated characters, links to playtest videos, and other details for GMs . It also has a contact form that can be used to ask questions or offer feedback. The webpage is: tickettocarcassonne.com/the-city-watch/
# Session Zero
If your players are new to tabletop role playing games (TTRPGs), you should make the first session a way to teach them what to expect, and to give an overview of how to play.
Start by having them create their characters and give them back stories. Alternatively, you might prefer to use the pre-generated characters which are available to download from the webpage (see introduction). These characters already have backstories that will enable them to interact with some of the NPCs.
Either way, PCs are equipped with light armour, a spear, manacles, and a horn for summoning help. They carry three gold pieces each, and one portion of rations. Optionally, the GM might allow each PC to create their own character.
The party's commander, Watch Captain [[person/lyza]], is a former adventurer herself, and as such she knows the value of having magic users and rogues on her team. She has selected her recruits from the most recent graduation class at the Academy, specifically looking for those who want more than just patrolling the streets and knocking heads.
[[person/lyza]] will instruct them in their duties and, as part of the induction process, will test their combat (and other) skills. The new recruits could perform a few rounds of combat with combat dummies, other guards (or maybe each other!) using wooden swords so players can get a feel for how combat works.
# Key NPCs
-- Lord Tograf :: The benevolent and well loved ruler of the city. He is a retired adventurer and a very rich old man. --
-- [[person/porky]] :: The Half orc landlord of [[landmark/the-giggling-gryphon]] tavern, which is the PCs' home base. --
-- Watch Captain [[person/lyza]] :: A powerful woman in her forties, she is a former adventurer and a formidable warrior. She takes her responsibilities seriously and she expects a lot from her people. --
-- Count Jaspar :: An eccentric and slightly sinister wizard, he is one of Lord Tograf's closest advisors. He is not well liked by the other noble citizens, but Tograf finds his skills useful in running and protecting the city. --
