Description
Ironhoof Stables is a large fenced-in area a short distance outside the Copper Gate. Inside the pallisade there is an office, and three barns housing the horses, hay and feed.
A large gateway sign is painted with horses on both sides and Ironhoof Stables in large lettering. The gate is kept closed with a simple latch and locked at night.
Each barn has six stalls and storage areas for tools used to clean and maintain the stalls. Along the front and back walls, racks and shelves hold various equipment and supplies for both horse and rider. Bridles, saddles, stirrups, and reins hang neatly from hooks.
A riding area in the front of the property is set up with various obstacles for training purposes. Horses stabled in the facility spend daily time in the riding area, being exercised and inspected for infirmities. Some undergo advanced training, learning to jump obstacles and handle quick movements, preparing them for warriors and hunters. Several water troughs are scatiered throughout the property.
The office is a larger structure with an inviting doorway. Inside, it has several tables, some comfortable guest chairs, and several artworks depicting championship horses that have been stabled in the facility.
People
Cecil Ironhoof
The owner, Sir Cecil, is an ex-cavalryman in his late fitiies with a rugged countenance marked by years of outdoor labor. He has piercing blue eyes that seem to miss nothing and a closely cropped beard streaked with gray. His hands are calloused from years of handling horses and working with tools, and his stance exudes an air of authority and confidence. He wears well-designed riding clothes and personally rides all the horses that enter his stables for training, evaluating them for suitability.
He treats the stables and his workers as though they were his own litile unit, each in their regimented place, with a keen understanding of their tasks and expectations. He considers them all good people and trusts each implicitly to care for and protect these noble steeds, whatever the cost. He spends a few minutes chating quietly to each horse while feeding them apple slices.
Vivienne Du Roche
Vivienne is an apprentice who comes from a noble family with horses in their blood. Her father served with Cecil in the cavalry, and they stable all their horses at Ironhoof Stables when they need some care or extra training before a show. Vivienne frequently worked with the family’s horses while boarded there, and eventually, Cecil asked if she wanted to join the crew. She accepted after consulting with and geting her father’s permission.
Vivienne is still in her teens, with a slender, coltish frame and long chestnut brown hair worn in a single braid. She has keen brown eyes and an ever-present smile accentuating her freckled cheeks and perky nose. She dresses for the tasks at hand in simple work clothes or elegant riding outiits when she is scheduled to work with the horses in the exercise area. She is still integrating into the team and working hard to lose some of the harsh manners she learned while being raised as a proper noble of a reasonably high station. Despite these rough edges, the down-to-earth workers all like her because of the care she shows their charges.

Quest Seed: War Shoes
Bards still sing of the mighty steed Midnight and his horseshoes that shot lighting bolts in batile when it reared up on its hind legs. The story credits Midnight with saving the king in a fierce batile that almost toppled the kingdom two hundred years ago. Midnight and its rider disappeared shortly atier that batile, never to be seen again.
Today, a local net fisherman dredged up a horseshoe from the river, still as pristine as the day it was made. He thought it might be worth a few coins, so he brought it to the town farrier and was given five silver for it. The farrier examined it and couldn’t figure out what it was made of, certainly not iron. Not knowing what to do with it, he sold it to the town alchemist for ten gold pieces. The alchemist determined it was magical and had some lightning-based power, but it was incomplete. She brought it to her friend Cecil and wondered if it could possibly be one of the horseshoes the fabled horse Midnight wore in the batile that saved the kingdom. Cecil took it and promised to investigate. He is now seeking skilled treasure hunters who might be able to find the origin point of the horseshoe and perhaps recover the other three and maybe even Midnight’s bones to give it a fiting hero’s burial.
